What Sentence Repetition Tasks Can Reveal about the Processing Effort Associated with Different Types of Code-Switching

چکیده

In this study, we explored the linguistic consolidation processes associated with bilingual processing using an experimental paradigm novel in bilingualism research, i.e., sentence repetition. We tested 46 L1-German L2-English bilinguals immersed L2 context. Firstly, compared participants’ repetition accuracy single-language sentences and involving code-switches. Secondly, investigated cost different types of code-switching, alternation, insertion, dense code-switching. Finally, assessed following potential predictors accuracy: regular usage code-switching types, executive functions (working memory inhibitory control), as well relevant variables (proficiency, dominance, immersion). Our first finding was that displayed reduced code-switches to sentences, but only when were L1. This suggests any costs are modulated by bilinguals’ language background. Moreover, poor performance L1 despite reporting high levels exposure frequency, highlights importance age acquisition dominance profiles for processing. terms our results revealed differed across The effort task primarily driven structural depth degree mixing involved code-switch, forms co-activation harder repeat than alternations unintegrated switching. effect partially converged sociolinguistic practices because also reported lower frequency no direct correlations observed at level individual differences. general cognitive functions, working not control. What can individual differences reveal about face processing?

Faces are probably the most widely studied visual stimulus. Most research on face processing has used a group-mean approach that averages behavioral or neural responses to faces across individuals and treats variance between individuals as noise. However, individual differences in face processing can provide valuable information that complements and extends findings from group-mean studies. Her...

2005: Ambiguities and anomalies: What can eye-movements and event-related potentials reveal about second language sentence processing

Second language sentence processing is examined here in light of several monolingual psycholinguistic models of parsing, as well as that of linguistic theories specifically adapted to account for second language acquisition in adult learners. We first examine studies that have primarily recorded eyemovements to trace syntactic processing. Syntactic-ambiguity resolution is used in these studies ...

Sentence repetition: what does the task measure?

BACKGROUND Sentence repetition is gaining increasing attention as a source of information about children's sentence-level abilities in clinical assessment, and as a clinical marker of specific language impairment. However, it is widely debated what the task is testing and therefore how informative it is. AIMS (1) To evaluate the effects of different types of long-term linguistic knowledge on ...

What Can Experiments Reveal About the Origins of Music?

The origins of music have intrigued scholars for thousands of years. In this article I discuss the role of experiments in discussions of these issues. I argue that potentially useful kinds of evidence are those that address the innateness and the specificity of different components of musical behavior. At present there is some evidence for innate influences on music, but little evidence for cap...
